As per police accounts, the individuals involved, presumed to be MBBS students from a government medical college, remain unidentified. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. near Kalarcode. Out of the seven passengers in the car, five sadly succumbed to their injuries.

Police reported that the bus passengers suffered only minor injuries. The accident disrupted traffic flow on the road, creating significant congestion. Authorities are still investigating to determine the exact cause of the collision.

The accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. when their Tavera car, reportedly moving at an excessive speed, veered out of control and collided head-on with a KSRTC bus traveling on the Guruvayur-Kayamkulam route.

Witness accounts describe the impact as devastating, with the car completely torn apart, ejecting the occupants onto the road. Three students were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Two additional students remain hospitalized, one of them in critical condition. Reports suggest that as many as 10 individuals were crammed into the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Detailes of the Accident

Alappuzha Municipal Vice-Chairman P. S. M. Hussain indicated that the car had attempted to overtake another vehicle but lost control after applying the brakes, causing it to skid into the path of the oncoming bus. The students were reportedly on their way to Kochi. Authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from nearby surveillance cameras to better understand the circumstances leading to the crash.

The driver of the KSRTC bus stated that the car was moving at an extremely high speed, leaving him no time to maneuver and avoid the collision. The Tavera car was utterly destroyed in the impact. The accident also caused significant traffic disruptions, while authorities remain uncertain about the precise cause of the tragedy.

Ongoing Investigation

An official investigation into the accident has been launched by the police and the Motor Vehicles Department. In a separate incident on December 1, a KSRTC bus collided with an ambulance on the Punalur-Muvattupuzha State Highway, injuring eight passengers. That bus had been operating on the Thiruvananthapuram to Pathanamthitta route.

The Alappuzha crash serves as a grim reminder of the need for enhanced road safety measures to curb the rising number of fatal accidents on Kerala’s roads.
